Youth Outreach

Phoenix recognizes travelling to access services can be challenging. Phoenix addresses the travel barrier by offering support to youth  ages 16-24 and their families in a community setting.  We regularly meet with youth in places they feel most comfortable,  including school, home,  or in a coffee shop. This means Phoenix  can go to you!

Advocacy

At Phoenix, we recognize that power is unequally distributed in systems, institutions and agencies and many people are often left without a voice. We believe that everyone has certain basic rights and advocating for and with youth, families and communities is a core component of the Phoenix approach. Our work involves individual advocacy and systems/policy changes that directly affect youth, families and communities. All programs at Phoenix are engaged in advocacy.

Community Engagement

At Phoenix, we believe that meaningful and healthy relationships must be nurtured in all aspects of our work. The stronger more meaningful our relationships, the bigger the impact. This includes relationships with the community.  We actively making room for, and are guided by the voices of youth, families and communities. While we may bring expertise and experience, youth families and communities are the experts in their own lives. We believe in an approach that is about walking alongside those with whom we work.

At the invitation of the Mulgrave Park Community, Phoenix established the Phoenix Youth and Community Centre (PYCC).  PYCC works collaboratively with the community to  provide relevant and meaningful programs for community members age 12+, their families, and other residents.  Programming focuses on leadership, arts and recreation, employment, education, and skill building.

Youth and Family Therapy

Sometimes it helps to talk.

Our Phoenix Youth and Family Therapy team believes that life can be difficult sometimes and that young people and their families can benefit from timely support when challenges affect their ability to thrive.

Our therapists at are masters-level social workers, with extensive training and experience.  This team offers therapy to youth between the ages of 11 and 24, and their families.

The youth and families we work with struggle with a range of challenges, including difficult family relationships, grief and loss, peer conflict and bullying, challenges at school, coping with emotions, low self-esteem, histories of abuse, and discrimination and poverty.

Our services are free, we are easy to reach, and we take referrals directly from youth and their families.

Arts, Recreation and Leadership

Arts and recreation creates happier, healthier youth, families and communities!

Phoenix provides arts, recreation, and leadership programming to any youth connected with our agency.  We encourage creative expression and recognize that young people learn through experiences. We connect youth with services in the community and provide services directly, depending on the needs of each youth. These services are available within our locations and specifically through the LE@P (Learn and Explore at Phoenix) program.

LE@P (Learn and Explore at Phoenix) is available to all Phoenix youth and offers a variety of opportunities to try new things, build skills, get involved in the community and benefit therapeutically by having some fun! LE@P is driven by youth and seeks to be highly inclusive. The diverse activities offered through LE@P are often made possible through collaborations with people and agencies.

Housing Support

Phoenix is dedicated to helping youth ages 16-24 find safe, long-term housing.

The majority of Housing Support at Phoenix is provided through the Phoenix Supportive Housing Program and the Phoenix Centre for Youth (PCFY). It’s important to know that these programs support each other, but are independent. For example, youth can be in the Homes for Independence Program without having lived at Phoenix House.

  1. Youth can apply to live at Phoenix House where we help them find longer-term/permanent housing. Youth at Phoenix House learn life skills, in-house support and participate in school, volunteerism or work as they build toward independent living.
  2. The three Phoenix Homes for Independence are each staffed with a Phoenix employee who lives as a roommate and offers in-house support to youth as they learn life skills and participate in programming.
  3. Located at PCFY, the Housing Support Worker works directly with youth, currently living in the shelter and those potentially at risk of entering the shelter system, to help them secure and maintain housing.

Money Management

Managing to make ends meet can seem impossible on a tight budget – we can help.

Our Trusteeship Program at Phoenix Centre for Youth works with youth to maintain their housing by helping them manage their finances. The trustee helps youth make rental payments on time, pay bills, cover other essential expenses such as food, clothing and personal care items. With the Trustee’s support youth develop monthly budgets, improve their financial management skills, and achieve increased independence, stability and control in their lives. The trustee helps to advocate around all financial matters for youth.

Financial workshops are also offered on occasion through a variety of Phoenix’s programs. Contact us to learn about upcoming workshops.
