Tenant Support Worker, Phoenix Scattered Site Housing Program

Position Overview: The Scattered Site Housing Program provides homes for young individuals aged 16 to 24 to foster independent living. Reporting to the Manager of Phoenix Scattered Site Housing, the Tenant Support Worker serves as a consistent, positive role model, demonstrating independent living and healthy lifestyle habits while residing on-site. The Tenant Support Worker will live in their own apartment and primarily provide support during after-hours and weekends, offering crisis support, helping to resolve any conflicts that may arise, and managing noise levels and crowd dynamics as needed. This position is part of the Phoenix Scattered Site Housing Team.

Program Overview: The Phoenix Scattered Site Housing program consists of five properties ranging from single family, shared housing and multi-unit buildings. The program can support up to 27 youth aged 16-24 with a focus on independent long-term transitional support. Youth in the program are supported by Phoenix’s wrap-around services through multiple programs based on their unique needs. The program is located in the North End of Halifax.

Reports to: Manager, Phoenix Scattered Site Housing Program

Location: Phoenix Scattered Site Housing, Kencrest Street, Halifax NS.

Compensation: $43,000 annual salary, comprehensive group medical insurance plan, Employee and Family Assistance Program, 3% Employer paid RRSP contribution, 3 weeks of vacation in the first year and 4 weeks of vacation in the second year, generous sick leave, a generous paid holiday schedule, in-house trainings, and professional development opportunities. It also includes free rent and utilities in a single occupancy 2-bedroom, 1 Bathroom fully furnished unit in Northend Halifax, with onsite parking.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week with some flexibility, primarily Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Week-long on-call responsibilities on a rotational basis may also be required.

Screening Requirements: Due to the sensitive nature of our work with youth, this position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search, a child abuse register check and proof of education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the program is congruent with Phoenix’s vision and values.

  • Work in accordance with Phoenix’s policies, procedures, and framework of practice.

  • Serve as a role model for youth in the program by demonstrating independent living skills, life skills, and healthy living habits.

  • Respond to after hour youth needs as warranted.

  • Respond appropriately and professional to any emergencies.

  • Perform minor maintenance tasks and inform appropriate individuals for significant maintenance issues.

  • Ensure safety and cleanliness of corridors and public areas of the building as needed between cleaning schedules.

  • Report any facility and youth concerns in a timely manner to Program Manager or Housing Support Coordinator.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings.

  • Contribute to a sense of community in the program.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities.

  • Commit to the development of the organization and participate in internal committees, projects, and activities.

  • Support the agency’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion through learning opportunities, critical self-reflection, and professional development.

  • Assuming other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of youth development and the issues of housing insecurity.

  • Ability to assess and respond appropriately to youth needs and emergency situations.

  • Skills and discretion to be an appropriate role model to youth.

  • Ability to identify and solve problems effectively.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally.

  • Strong interpersonal relationships and youth service skills.

  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively in a team environment.

  • Knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention.

  • Familiarity with the concepts of anti-oppressive practice (harm reduction, narrative practice, a client-directed approach, and a social justice perspective) is an asset.

  • Proven knowledge of community resources and the social service delivery system is an asset.

  • Physical ability to lift light loads, walk up and down stairs, and perform light facility maintenance.

  • General maintenance skills (either work or personal experience) – plumbing; painting; mechanical; general repairs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Social Work or Undergraduate degree or diploma in a related field preferred.

  • Registration or Candidacy for Registration, certification, or membership of a related professional body (if applicable).

  • At least two years’ experience working or volunteering with youth or in the field of social/human services.

  • At least three years’ experience living independently or with a roommate.

  • Non-violent crisis intervention, suicide intervention, standard first aid and medication dispensing training, food safety handling or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of being hired. Please note some of these trainings are offered in-house.

  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check mandatory.
