1987 was the year when Aretha Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rick Hansen completed his Man in Motion world tour, the ‘loonie’ was minted and an agreement was reached on NAFTA. It was also the year that five community-minded Haligonians and St. Paul’s Home decided to trust the magic of new beginnings. Thinking back to this decision 30 years ago is both humbling and motivating.
I joined the Phoenix family initially in a term position, a year and a half after the doors of our first program, Phoenix House, opened. We had limited resources, but our commitment was strong. Everything was donated – linens, chairs and kitchen utensils. The efforts of so many volunteers made it all work. I can say undoubtedly that every young person we have had the pleasure of getting to know, and work with, since day one has been inspiring and resilient. And, everyone’s journey that leads them to Phoenix is as diverse as the people themselves.
I think of the young woman with mental health issues seeking the support she had gone too long without. I remember the relief she expressed after her first night at Phoenix House. “I had the best sleep ever – it is so comforting here”.
I remember also the young man who came from crushing poverty, hoping for stable housing, healthy meals and educational support. I will never forget the sight of him beaming with pride on his high school graduation day. So many beautiful, talented and brave young people…
Although my hair has gotten shorter and our name ‘Phoenix Youth Programs’ has gotten longer to better reflect the fullness of our wide range of services, we continue to hold the same sacred trust today as we held back then. We are driven and directed by the belief that everyone counts and when you have the support you need to thrive, we shine as a collective.
Our incredible team is driven by these values in all we do to support youth, families and communities. As we look forward to the next 30 years, and we anticipate continued evolution in direct response to the needs of our community.
It’s staggering to think about the number of people who have been connected to Phoenix over the years – the staff, volunteers, donors, community members, those we partnered with in Government, and youth would range in the tens of thousands. That’s why this year, Phoenix’s 30th, belongs to us all!
A heartfelt thanks for all the support!
Let’s celebrate together!
